WhatsApp automation bot for Barabari

Reaching thousands of people where they already are: on WhatsApp.

Barabari Tech Collective is an India-based startup working on economic empowerment and equitable access to opportunity. We built a WhatsApp automation bot that lets their team run outreach campaigns, collect structured data, and respond to community queries at scale, without requiring any technical knowledge to operate.

01

The starting point

Barabari's team was spending hours each day manually replying to WhatsApp messages from the communities they serve. Programme updates, application reminders, and eligibility queries were all handled person-to-person, which meant response times were slow and the team's capacity was the ceiling on how many people they could reach. Off-the-shelf chatbot tools were either too expensive, too rigid, or required infrastructure Barabari didn't have.

02

What we built

We built on top of the WhatsApp Business API with a custom conversation engine that the Barabari team could configure through a simple dashboard: no code, no developer dependency. Conversation flows were defined as decision trees with human handoff triggers: the bot handled routing, FAQs, and data collection, and escalated to a team member when a conversation required judgment. We built a broadcast module so the team could send targeted programme updates to specific segments of their contact list.

What changed

The bot now handles over 2,000 conversations per month across Barabari's programme areas, with the team's manual message load reduced by more than 70%. Programme application completion rates improved because the bot follows up at the right moments. The team runs campaigns and updates flows themselves, and has used the system to reach communities across India they hadn't previously had capacity to serve.
